Chef InstrustorChef Instructor Volunteer Cooking Matters is a free, six-week-long cooking and nutrition series for low-income families in Genesee County. Classes are taught by Michigan State University Extension nutrition professionals and volunteer chefs. We partner with host sites including, but not limited to, community centers, clinics, shelters, housing sites, non-profit organizations, and school programs to offer courses throughout the community. Join us and volunteer for our program as a chef! Chef Job Description: The chef will work with the nutrition professional to teach basic cooking skills. The classes are intended to be highly participatory cooking demonstrations. It is important to include the participants with various tasks and allow for hands-on learning in the kitchen. Some cooking skills to demonstrate and practice in class are basic cooking techniques and terminology, proper knife handling, various cooking methods, and food safety and sanitation measures. Chef Qualifications: A graduate of or enrolled in a two-year culinary training program or have at least two years working as a cook or chef. Background check required. Time Commitment: Classes meet once a week for six weeks. Class day and times vary. Each week, the classes require a time commitment of three hours for preparation, teaching, and clean-up.
